Academic Streams
Control: Stockholm, June 14–17, 2016
Stream descriptions were added as they were accepted for the 10th European Society for Literature, Science and the Arts Conference. The streams listed below were accepted for the 2016 programme.
Control-Security
During the early decades of the twenty-first century, no problematic has become more central to our understanding of biopolitical power than security. This stream examined security as a form of biopower over life, addressing contemporary formations including cyber security, food security, and the broader politics of control through security apparatuses.
Stream Organizers
The conference brought together stream organizers from across disciplines, including Adam Bencard, Brad Evans, Elisabeth Friis, Dehlia Hannah, Stefan Helgesson, Tora Holmberg, Caroline Holmqvist, and Jens Hauser.
For further details on the Call for Papers that shaped these streams, see the CFP page.
The Control-Security stream at the conference explored how security functions as a form of biopower in the twenty-first century, examining the intersections of governance, technology, and cultural production. Participants considered how literary narratives and artistic representations engage with questions of surveillance, risk management, and the politics of control. By bringing together perspectives from the sciences and humanities, this track illuminated the complex ways that security discourse shapes contemporary life, from digital infrastructures to environmental policy, and how creative works both reflect and challenge these evolving systems of oversight and regulation.
